Koninklijke trips: Windsor Castle

In de reeks ‘Koninklijke trips’ schrijf ik over de kastelen, paleizen en andere koninklijke bezienswaardigheden die ik heb bezocht. English translation below!

In 2012 stond Londen op de lijst. Ook op deze city trip stond er bezoek aan een kasteel gepland. Aan twee kastelen zelfs: Windsor Castle en Hampton Court. Hampton Court komt de volgende keer aan de beurt, nu gaat de aandacht uit naar Windsor Castle!

Vanuit Londen is het heel makkelijk om met het openbaar vervoer te reizen naar Windsor, wat net buiten Londen ligt. Mijn moeder – fervent Engeland-toerist vroeger – was enigzins jaloers dat ik zo makkelijk bij het kasteel kon komen. Toen zij en mijn vader Windsor Castle bezochten, moesten ze de lange toegangsweg via de heuvel aflopen. Niettemin vond ze het erg leuk dat ik het kasteel ging bezoeken en keek ze uit naar mijn indrukken en foto’s.

Het stationnetje waar je aankomt is heerlijk pittoresk en heerlijk Brits. Als Anglofiel stond ik breed grijnzend rond te kijken. En kleine verrassing: zodra je het stationsgebouw uit bent, sta je oog in oog met het kasteel! Alleen erg jammer dat ik de wisseling van de wacht net gemist had.

Van buiten ziet het kasteel, met zijn kenmerkende ronde toren, er indrukwekkend uit. Ook de kerk op het terrein van kasteel – de St. George’s Chapel – is imposant aan de buitenkant.
Binnen in Windsor Castle rondlopen is naast leuk vooral interessant. Er is veel moois te zien en alles is perfect onderhouden. Niet zo gek, want het kasteel wordt gewoon gebruikt door de koninklijke familie. Al kun je het gedeelte waar ze hun kamers hebben niet bezoeken natuurlijk.

Mijn bezoek was goed getimed, want er was een tentoonstelling over Da Vinci in een van de ruimten van het kasteel. De Britse koninklijke familie zijn namelijk de trotse eigenaar van tekeningen, schetsen en notities van Leonardo da Vinci. Als Da Vinci-fan was dat een mooie bonus! Oog in oog staan met echte Da Vinci’s liet me kwijlen. Ik heb nog geprobeerd om de Royal Library te mogen bezoeken, maar helaas… Dat vond de Queen een niet zo goed idee ;).

Het groen op het terrein van Windsor Castle was ook prachtig. Geniet even mee.

Het stadje zelf is ook schattig. Met een standbeeld van Queen Victoria en een pub vernoemd naar de hertogin van Cambridge!

In 2012 London was the destination for the next trip. It should be no surprise that on this trip a castle was included. Two castles even: Windsor Castle and Hampton Court. Hampton Court will be featured next time, for now we focus on Windsor!

It’s very easy to get to the castle from London with public transport, as Windsor is just outside London. My mother – a frequent traveller to England – was a bit jealous I could get to the castle so easily. When my parents visited Windsor Castle, they had to walk the long road over the hill.

When you arrive, the train station is very British and very pittoresque. Being the Anglophile that I am, I looked around with a big grin on my face. Small surprise, when you live the train station, you find yourself looking at the castle! A pity that I had just missed the changing of the guards.

From the outside the castle, with it’s famous round tower, looks imposing. Also the St. George’s Chapel looks fantastic from the outside. Besides being fun, walking around in Windsor Castle is interesting. A lot of beautiful things can be seen and everything is immaculate. Not surprising since the Castle is in use by the Windsors. Obviously you can’t visit their private rooms.

My visit was well timed, because there was an exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci. The Windsors are the proud owner of a collection of drawings and notes of Da Vinci. As a Da Vinci-fan that is a bonus! Seeing real Da Vinci’s made me drool. I tried to get in the Royal Library, but the Queen wasn’t amused by that idea ;).

The nature on the grounds of the castle is beautiful as well. Enjoy!

The small city itself is cute. With a statue of Queen Victoria and a pub named after the Duchess of Cambridge.
